Meroi
Meroi Winery, established in 1920 by Domenico Meroi, stands as a testament to generations of winemaking heritage. Paolo Meroi, continuing this legacy, acquired some portions of the esteemed Zitelle vineyard in 2004 (considered a “Grand Cru” site in the Colli Orientali), adding to their portfolio of storied parcels like Barchetta and Durì. His other vineyard site, called Dominin after his father, is also considered a “Grand Cru” in this appellation.
Nestled in Buttrio's high hills in the heart of the Colli Orientali appellation, Meroi's wines epitomize the region's essence, shaped by the unique "ponca" soil—a blend of marl and sandstone from ancient Eocene seas. This singular terroir has gained global recognition for producing wines of exceptional quality and character. Meroi's commitment to organic farming extends beyond sustainability; it reflects a deep respect for the land's natural balance. Embracing natural pest control methods fosters biodiversity and enriches the vineyard ecosystem.
Buttrio's landscape boasts a rich diversity of grape varietals, with whites like Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, and Malvasia thriving alongside reds like Merlot and Refosco. Sauvignon and Chardonnay, along with Merlot and Cabernet Franc, were introduced more than 300 years ago by the Austrians. The ponca soil imparts a distinct flavor profile to these familiar grapes, elevating them to new heights of complexity, intensity and persistence.
Meroi's meticulous vineyard management, combined with traditional cellar practices, results in wines of spectacular quality. Their limited-production approach ensures each bottle is a true expression of Buttrio's terroir, reflecting the family's enduring commitment to crafting wines that are not just memorable but also a testament to resilience and tradition.
The single parcel bottlings from Zitelle and Dominin Crus (“Green Labels”) are produced only in the best vintages, and from an extreme selection of the best grapes from those parcels.
