Roberto Rondelli

Roberto Rondelli's story begins in 2000, amidst the steep hills of the Dolceacqua DOC, when he decided to buy back his grandfather's vineyards in Camporosso. With the help of his father, Roberto replanted these old vineyards with the local varieties Rossese, Vermentino and Pigato. In 2009, after several years of studying and experimenting, Roberto finally released his first wines. In 2012 he purchased a tiny building in the hamlet of Brunetti (one of the DOC's designated crus), which today serves as his home and cellar. Roberto's vineyards are certified organic and he applies several biodynamic practices, resulting in a natural, respectful winemaking approach. By fermenting each variety and plot separately with native yeasts and low sulfites he brings into each bottle without filters the true character of these grapes and the unique flavors of these lands. Roberto currently produces less than 15k bottles, and makes 6 different wines.

Dolceacqua is a tiny village nestled amidst the hills above Ventimiglia, Liguria's westernmost town on the border with France's Cote d'Azure. The scenery is breathtaking: Mediterranean shrub, maritime pines, and olive trees fill the view with shades of green, bright yellow brooms dot the landscape, while white sandstone canyons and a deep blue sea stand in the background. The air is filled with iodine and Mediterranean herbs. In this unique area, Rossese thrives alongside the local clones of Vermentino and Pigato. A variety native of this coastal area between Western Liguria and Provence (where it is known as Tibouren), Rossese is capable of making lifted, delicate, vibrant reds that are light to medium bodied, and yet aromatically complex,
The Dolceacqua DOC appellation is centered around the village of Dolceacqua and includes 6 nearby villages, each with its own vineyard designations (called Nomeranze). With less than 100 hectares (1200 acres) this is one of the smallest appellations in all of Italy.

    "Arenaria" Dolceacqua DOC

"Arenaria" (sandstone in Italian) is a delightful, vibrant, juicy and lively red that combines all the classic aromas of Rossese: small berry, wild currant, Mediterranean herbs, fresh spices. Light on its feet, but full of character and complexity this is a versatile red that can (and should) be served slightly chilled (55-58F), and that in keeping with Ligurian tradition can be paired with fish & tomato based dishes and soups. Fermented with some whole clusters and a semi-carbonic maceration to add layers of aromatic complexity without sacrificing Rossese quintessential energy and lightness.
